LEXINGTON, KY (Nov. 11, 2012) – Trade remained brisk during Sunday’s sixth session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, with double-digit growth in gross sales, and average and median prices.
Keeneland sold 265 horses on Sunday for $10,740,300, up 21.32 percent from 2011 when 271 horses brought $8,852,700. Average price increased 24.07 percent from $32,667 to $40,529, while the median price of $32,000 rose 28 percent over last year’s $25,000.
Moro Tap, the final horse to sell in the session, brought the day’s top price of $350,000 from Terry Raymond and Skychai Racing. Consigned by Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, agent, the two-year-old Tapit colt, out of the stakes-winning Silver Ghost mare Ghost Dancing, was consigned as a racing or stallion prospect.
“I liked his race (the colt finished second in his first career start at Calder on October 12), and I’m a big fan of Tapit,” said trainer Mike Maker, who signed the ticket for Moro Tap. Maker trained champion Hansen, also by Tapit, of which Skychai Racing was part-owner.
Maker said Moro Tap will return to Florida and continue in training.
Through six sessions of the 11-day sale, 1,202 horses have been sold for $124,586,900, for an average of $103,650 and a median of $50,000. During last year’s comparable period, 1,344 horses were sold for $189,163,900, for an average of $140,747 and a median of $60,000.
Cumulative totals from 2011 include two premier dispersals – the record dispersal of the estate of Edward P. Evans’ Spring Hill Farm, which sold 149 horses for $54,506,000, and the dispersal of Saud bin Khaled’s Palides Investments N.V., Inc., which sold 20 horses sold for $16,813,000.
When dispersals are excluded from the 2011 cumulative numbers, 1,202 horses have been sold for $124,586,900, an increase of 5.72 percent from 2011 when 1,175 horses brought $117,844,900. Average price of $103,650 rose 3.35 percent from $100,294 last year, while the median of $50,000 remained unchanged.
Stakes winner Magnetic Miss, sold in foal to two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, brought the day’s second-highest price, going for $190,000 to Margaux Farm, agent. An eight-year-old mare by Artax out of the stakes-winning Deposit Ticket mare Deposit Express, Magnetic Miss is a half-sister to stakes winners Royal Express and Hydro Power. She was consigned by Hidden Brook, agent for Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC.
