Medco Health Solutions Inc. has selected a site in central Indiana on which it plans to build a new facility that is being billed as the world’s largest and most advanced automated pharmacy.

The new 318,000-square-foot pharmacy, slated to open early in 2009, will cover an area equivalent to six and a half football fields and will bring approximately 1,300 jobs to the state by its anticipated peak operation in 2012.

New Jersey-based Medco is investing more than $140 million to develop the facility, which will employ pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, engineering technology, pharmacy support and management positions. The mail-order facility is expected to dispense more than one million prescriptions a week at peak operation.
