LOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 3, 2013) — Saying he wants the city to break its own “world record” for the most people wearing red in one day, Mayor Greg Fischer today declared Friday as Cardinal Red Day in Louisville.
He encouraged people to wear red, businesses to display red in their windows and doors and residents to show red at their homes, in their neighborhoods and on Facebook and other social media.

“I want to paint the town red – literally,” Fischer said. “It’s been an amazing, and lately very emotional, season for the Cards – both the men and the women — and we want the whole city to get behind them in their quest for national titles in Atlanta and New Orleans.”
“The city is abuzz with excitement over both men’s and women’s teams – and the tremendous teamwork that brought them to this pinnacle of college basketball,” the mayor said. “Kevin Ware showed that, even in personal adversity, he put his teammates first, asking them to win the game and they responded by rallying around him. The women’s satisfying run in the tournament shows what a high-performance team can accomplish.”
The mayor noted that Louisville created and set its existing world record for Most People Wearing Red in a Day last year during the Cards run to the 2012 Final Four.
“This is a special time to be a Louisvillian and to show your support for our hometown teams,” Fischer said.

The Louisville Cardinals face Wichita State on Saturday at 6:09 p.m. ET at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The game will be shown on CBS.
