Midway College gets $500,000 donation

Jan and Dick Hunter pledge funds for Marsden Initiative

MIDWAY, Ky. (June 19, 2013) — Dr. John P. Marsden, president of Midway College, has received a major gift on behalf of the institution from board member, Jan Hunter and her husband, Dick.

The announcement comes just four-and-one-half months into Marsden’s tenure as the 10th president of Midway College.

“This gift reflects our belief in the leadership of the new president and the new board chair,” said Jan Hunter. “Our gift is unrestricted but is to be called the Marsden Initiative. The gift is to be used at the discretion of Dr. Marsden to support the needs of the institution. We trust and support his leadership and in just the short time I’ve known him I believe in the direction he is taking the college.”

The donation is significant “monetarily and in the spirit in which it has been given. It demonstrates a strong belief in the new direction we are setting for the college,” Marsden said. “I anticipate the funds to be used in a variety of ways but all will be directly tied to supporting the educational experiences of our students.”

In just a few short months, Marsden has already begun work on a new strategic plan for Midway College, has instituted a new budgeting process and is building his leadership team. A national search was completed in May for the new vice-president of academic affairs and provost. Dr. Laura Armesto was selected and begins her duties on June 24. The college also is currently in the search process for a new chief financial officer and vice president of advancement.

Mrs. Hunter has been a board member of Midway College since November 2000. The Hunters reside in San Diego and own Hunter Industries Inc.
