Courses begin this fall at Kentucky Manufacturing Career Center
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Aug. 15, 2013) — The Kentucky Manufacturing Career Center is enrolling students for its Certified Production Technician training class that begins Sept. 3 and its Multi-Skilled Technician class that begins on Oct. 14. The classes are free for individuals who have earned the National Career Readiness Certificate and are seeking jobs in the manufacturing industry.
Graduates of each class will receive college credit through Jefferson Community and Technical College (JCTC). Before graduation, students will have opportunities to be interviewed by representatives of local manufacturing companies for jobs. The center’s staff also will assist graduates in finding manufacturing jobs.
“We sent several employees to the training this summer,” said Rena Sharpe, vice president of operations at the Westport Group, a component integrator, manufacturing and logistics company in Louisville. “They told us that the training class has made them more aware of industry standards for best practices and gave them a better understanding of the manufacturing process. The classes also prepare jobseekers with the skills that manufacturers want in entry-level employees. We know graduates will be qualified for our jobs.”
Certified Production Technician training
The four-week Certified Production Technician training class meets Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the weeks of Sept. 3-6, Sept. 9-13, Sept. 23-27 and Sept. 30-Oct. 4. Students who complete the training will be prepared for manufacturing jobs and will receive a nationally recognized certificate from the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council, which is recognized by many area manufacturers.
The training includes four modules that cover:
♦ Safety
♦ Quality practices and measurement
♦ Manufacturing processes and production
♦ Maintenance awareness
Douglas H. Baker, a machine operator at Universal Woods in Jeffersontown, was in the first Certified Production Technician class offered at the Kentucky Manufacturing Career Center.
“I’ve been using the personal skills in the ‘Safety’ section to help train other employees at my station, and I’ve been looking at the production processes in the plant,” Baker said. “It makes more sense now.”
Baker has been recommending the course to his coworkers as a “good standard training” in manufacturing. He said that being a Certified Production Technician will be helpful in future manufacturing work.
Graduates also receive nine college credit hours through JCTC.
Multi-Skilled Technician training
The 60-hour Multi-Skilled Technician certificate course is offered by JCTC and leads to a college credential. The class begins Oct. 14 and will meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon for four weeks. Training is complete on Nov. 8.
The hands-on course provides students with skills to operate, troubleshoot, program and problem-solve in a modern technological environment. Using a Mechatronics trainer, students will work at seven teaching stations to learn mechanical, electrical, electronics and software skills needed to make a real, working directional control valve in at least four variations.
The Mechatronics trainer allows students to work on individual skills as well as on team projects that expose students to a wide range of technology situations they would encounter on the job. Students will learn about mechanical drives, electrical motor control, robotics and many other technologies used in manufacturing production systems.

NCRC requirement to get free training
A pre-requisite for enrolling in both manufacturing training courses is the NCRC. People can take the assessment to earn the certification at no charge at the Kentucky Manufacturing Career Center, located at 160 Rochester Dr. in Louisville. Interested students should contact the center at (502) 276-9711 to attend an NCRC orientation and schedule a time to take the assessment.
The NCRC is a credential recognized by employers across the nation as a reliable predictor of workplace success.
