Day of Caring is Saturday in 10 Kentucky cities

300 volunteers to partner with 20 nonprofit organizations

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (July 30, 2014) — For the 10th straight year, more than 300 volunteers will partner with nearly 20 nonprofit organizations in 10 cities. The outreach effort, called Day of Caring, takes place this Saturday and is the largest annual volunteerism event led by Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company each year.

Day of Caring is part of the LG&E and KU annual employee giving campaign called Power of One, which brings together monetary giving and volunteer work.

These efforts will support participating nonprofit organizations in Louisville, Lexington, Campbellsville, Danville, Elizabethtown, Greenville, Middlesboro, Richmond, Versailles and Norton, Va.

In addition, more than 16,000 backpacks filled with necessary supplies will be distributed during back-to-school events in Louisville, Lexington and eight other Kentucky locations. School supplies such as pencils, paper, folders and other items were purchased through a partnership with Walmart.

“This year marks a decade for our company’s employee giving campaign, and our campaign has continued to grow exponentially over the last ten years,” said Greg Thomas, vice president of Electric Distribution for LG&E and KU and co-chair of the 2014 Power of One campaign. “Whether our employees are coming together on a single day, like Day of Caring, or giving their time throughout the year, we proudly support the vital services and public spaces that have become such an important part of our communities.”

The backpack distributions are part of LG&E and KU’s larger school supply drive across the utilities’ service territories. Backpacks will be distributed during back-to-school events organized by employee volunteers benefiting students in Louisville, Lexington, Mt. Washington, Harrodsburg and Central City, as well as Bullitt, Meade, Ohio, Carroll and Trimble counties.
