State’s only daylong celebration of deaf and hard of hearing art, language and culture
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Aug. 4, 2014) — A showcase of short films by deaf filmmakers and a partnership with Louisville Worldfest are just two unique features of DeaFestival-Kentucky 2014. The event, the state’s only daylong celebration of deaf and hard of hearing art, language and culture, will be held Aug. 30 at the Kentucky Center in Louisville.
The theme of DeaFestival 2014, “Pure Imagination,” will be woven through the three performance programs beginning in the morning with the children’s program featuring storytelling, music and poetry, and will continue that afternoon in Spotlights, a showcase for theatrical performers, dancers and comedians. Jam Tent will round out the day with performances by the top deaf and hard of hearing hip hop and rock ’n’ roll dancers and musicians in the nation.
Throughout the day, visitors can also see work by deaf and hard of hearing visual artists in the Elizabeth “Cookie” Williams Art Gallery.
More than 50 visual and performing artists will combine to give Kentucky’s deaf and hard of hearing community a family friendly day to remember.
This will be the 11th celebration of DeaFestival, which began in 1996 in Danville at Kentucky School for the Deaf. It was held annually until 1998 when it became a biennial event. This year’s DeaFestival will be the sixth to be held in Louisville. Last year, more than 10,000 people attended the event, which was held in conjunction with the weeklong National Association of the Deaf biennial conference.
This edition of DeaFestival is also special because the event will again partner with Louisville’s Worldfest, which runs Aug. 29-Sept. 1 on the Belvedere adjacent to the Kentucky Center. That event’s mixture of international entertainment and cuisine will add to DeaFestival’s distinctive celebration of culture.
