Record number of unclaimed property claims at state fair

Claims valued at more than $810,000

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept 3., 2014) — There was a record 2,385 requests for unclaimed property at this year’s state fair, up by more than 1,000 claims from last year.

statefairThe claims, valued at more than $810,000, were started onsite by employees who worked 252 hours at the fair.

A proactive initiative began by State Treasurer Todd Hollenbach called Treasure Finders attempts to return lost money turned over to Kentucky State Treasury.

For the first time State Treasury computers were connected to the Missing Money, which allowed more than 70,000 searches of most of the U.S. and parts of Canada, rather than in past years when it was limited to Kentucky.

This year alone, Kentucky State Treasury received more than $50 million in lost or abandoned and holds nearly $500 million in unclaimed property. Each year, the Kentucky Treasury returns millions of dollars to Kentucky residents.  Since 2008, Treasure Finders has returned nearly $110 million.
