Cecil Zweifel, founder of Asbury University athletics, dies at 84

Wore many hats as athletic director and coach of several sports

WILMORE, Ky. (Oct. 30, 2014) — Dr. Cecil C. Zweifel, founder of Asbury University athletics and long-time coach, passed away on Oct. 28 at the age of 84.

Zweifel joined the faculty at Asbury in 1957 and helped create the Physical Education and Recreation program.

An enthusiastic baseball player and assistant basketball coach during his own college years, Zweifel was a key player in Asbury’s transition to intercollegiate athletics in 1971. He served as athletic director, tennis coach, baseball coach and soccer coach.

Zweifel is survived by his wife of 61 years, Johnetta; children James Cleveland Zweifel and Martha Cecile Zweifel; grandchildren Charles, John, Tyler, Austin, Madison, Jesse; and great-grandchildren Elijah, Carter, Josiah and Addison.

Visitation is from 5-9 p.m. on Friday at Wilmore Free Methodist Church in Wilmore, Ky. Following a private funeral on Nov. 1, a memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wilmore Free Methodist Church.
