heartvalves1The procedure is expected to go live at about 10 a.m.

Cardiologist Lorrel Brown, M.D., an experienced heart specialist, will tweet during the procedure and answer questions posted on Twitter.

The scheduled procedure will be a transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), a minimally invasive valve replacement for patients with severe aortic stenosis who are not well enough to undergo traditional open-heart surgery.

During the TAVR procedure, a cardiologist and cardiothoracic surgeon work together to implant a new heart valve, called the Edwards SAPIEN XT, through a small puncture in the groin. The procedure is performed in the hybrid operating room at Jewish Hospital.

Performing the TAVR procedure will be Assistant Professor of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Kendra Grubb, MD and Interventional Cardiologist and Assistant Professor of Medicine Michael Flaherty, MD, along with the Jewish Hospital Heart Valve team. Both practice with UofL Physicians.
