Higher minimum wage begins in Louisville with court’s permission

Court of Appeals denies request for delay in hike

Louisville, Ky. – The minimum wage in Louisville is now $7.75 beginning today, up 50 cents, after the Kentucky Court of Appeals refused to stop the wage increase while the decision was being appealed.

Ultimately, the minimum will be raised to $9 over three years.

Earlier this week, a Jefferson County judge upheld the Louisville Metro Council’s right to raise the minimum wage higher than that set by state law. Following that decision a few business groups, including the Kentucky Restaurant Association, asked to the Court of Appeals to delay the minimum wage increase while the ruling was being appealed.

On Tuesday, the court denied the request. The Court of Appeals could still strike down the minimum wage increase based on the appeal.
