Kentucky Artists added to Teaching Artists Directory

Directory connects artists and educators

FRANKFORT, Ky. (July 29, 2015) — Four professional artists have been added to the Kentucky Arts Council’s Teaching Artists Directory to work with educators to design and implement quality arts education programs in Kentucky schools

artsThe Teaching Artists Directory is an adjudicated resource featuring artists from various disciplines. The directory connects schools and educators with artists who produce high-quality work and who can assist in the creation of arts programming in schools around the Commonwealth

Artists added to the directory, with county of residence and artistic discipline, are:

  • Samuel Hawkins, McCracken County, poetry
  • Devonna Hisel, Jackson County, visual arts
  • Jeremy Kisling, Fayette County, theater
  • Bob Montgomery, Madison County, folk and traditional arts

“Arts education for our young people is the key to developing well-rounded Kentuckians who have compassion and empathy and know who they are and what the arts do for them,” said Kisling, associate artistic director in charge of education at Lexington Children’s Theatre. “I wanted to be part of the directory to spread the mission of arts education. A lot of times, as a theater artist, I talk to teachers about incorporating theater in their classrooms, and they think they have to put on a play, and that’s not the case. I have a mission to talk about other opportunities that theater provides in the classroom, and I’m excited to be a part of the Teaching Artists Directory.”

Any Kentucky school applying for funds through the arts council’s Teaching Art Together Grant is required to work with an artist listed in the directory. For more information, or to apply, visit the Teaching Artists Directory page of the arts council website, or contact Jean St. John, arts council education director, at [email protected] or 502-564-8110, ext. 486.
