KentuckyOne Health names VP of Medical Affairs at St. Joseph

Lexington, Ky. – Dan Goulson, MD, has been named vice president of medical affairs for Saint Joseph Hospital, part of KentuckyOne Health. In this role, Goulson will provide clinical, operational, strategic and cultural leadership to deliver high-value across the continuum of care while also improving the health status of the populations served by KentuckyOne Health. This position will also oversee medical staff activities and support the organization’s safety and quality goals.

Dr. Goulson is a physician executive board certified in anesthesiology and medical management with strategic, operational, quality and safety and population health management experience across the community hospital environment, a multi-state health system, an academic medical center and government health care.

Most recently, he served as chief medical officer, for Bon Secours Kentucky Health System in Ashland, Ky., overseeing the organization’s 214-bed Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, employed provider group of 70 physicians and advanced practice clinicians in 29 offices, and home health agency.

During that time, he also served as system medical director for the Institute for Patient Safety for Bon Secours Health System, a $3.4B Catholic health care ministry with 14 hospitals across seven states, headquartered outside of Baltimore, Md. In this role, he led standardization of patient safety efforts and processes across all system facilities and developed a three-year strategy to establish a high-reliability safety culture.

Past roles also include medical director for the Center for Advanced Surgery at UK Healthcare as well as chief of the Anesthesia Department at Northern Navajo Medical Center in New Mexico.

Dr. Goulson received a bachelor of science in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, attended medical school at the University of North Carolina, completed residency at the University of Wisconsin and received his certificate in medical management from the University of Kentucky.

His professional association memberships include American College of Physician Executives, American Association for Physician Leadership, American College of Healthcare Executives, American Society of Anesthesiologists and Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia, for which he served on the board of directors from 2007 – 2013.
