UK alumni and friends invited to #SeeBlueGiveBlue on Giving Tuesday

Lexington, Ky. – For the first time, the University of Kentucky is joining the global day of giving, #GivingTuesday, as it encourages philanthropy and celebrates the generosity of UK alumni and friends.

Occurring this year on Dec. 1, the UK community is invited to make a gift to one or more of UK’s colleges and programs.

#GivingTuesday was launched in 2011 in response to the increased commercialization of Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) and the subsequent Cyber Monday, which have become the busiest shopping days of the year. Last year, more than 30,000 charitable organizations and nonprofit organizations in 68 countries participated in the day-long event.

“#GivingTuesday is a day that unites the University of Kentucky community as we impact the mission of this great institution through our charitable giving,” said Anne Lichtenberg, director of annual giving.

Although no specific dollar goal has been set for this first-time effort, Lichtenberg noted that UK’s participation this holiday season is a great starting point.

“We are pleased that the majority of colleges, as well as UK Libraries, are partnering with the Office of Philanthropy as we encourage the UK community, including our alumni, parents and friends, to make a gift to any area of the university they are passionate about,” Lichtenberg said.

“Social media will be a large component in reaching out to our alumni and friends,” she said. “We encourage everyone to post on their social media accounts using the hashtags ‘#GivingTuesday’ and ‘#SeeBlueGiveBlue.’ We want all of UK and its supporters to promote this as a day of giving back to the university.”

UK alumni and friends wishing to participate are asked to make their secure online gifts at www.uky.edu/GiveNow.
