High school state football champions to be crowned this week

Games Thursday through Sunday in Bowling Green

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 1, 2015) — State high school football champions will be crowned this week in six classes. The Russell Athletic/Kentucky High School Athletic Association championships will be played Thursday through Sunday at Houchens Industries–L. T. Smith Stadium at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green.

The 1A game will be played at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The contest features Beechwood (13-1) taking on Pikeville (12-2).

On Saturday at 5 p.m. Male (14-0) will face Lafayette (12-2) in the 6A game.

The 5A game, which will be played at 8 p.m., features the past two state champions. Bowling Green (13-1), which won the state title in 2013, plays defending champion Pulaski County (13-1).

On Sunday at 1 p.m. Mayfield (13-1) will face Newport Central Catholic (9-5) for the 2A title. Mayfield was the 1A state champion last year, while Newport Central Catholic was the 2A runner-up in 2014.

At 4 p.m. on Sunday in the 3A title game Lexington Catholic (11-3) plays defending champion Belfry (13-1).

In the weekend’s final game, South Warren (14-0) plays Johnson Central (12-1) at 7 p.m. in the 4A championship.
