Part of Kiplinger’s list of the 300 best college values

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 17, 2015) — Four state institutes of higher learning have been named to Kiplinger’s list of the 300 best college values. Centre College was ranked 55th, Berea College 93rd, Transylvania University 127th and the University of Louisville 262nd.

Introduced in 1998, the Kiplinger rankings highlight public schools, private universities and private liberal arts colleges that combine outstanding academics with affordable cost. Kiplinger assesses value by measurable standards of academic quality and affordability. Quality measures include the admission rate, the percentage of students who return for sophomore year, the student-faculty ration and four-year graduation rate. Cost criteria include sticker price, financial aid and average debt at graduation.

Centre has a total cost per year of $49,320 and a four-year graduation rate of 80 percent. Average need-based aid is $25,491, average non-need based aid is $18,766. The average debt after graduation is $25,944 and the salary yardstick is $45,000.

Berea has a total cost per year of $7,680 and a four-year graduation rate of 45 percent. Average need-based aid is $3,882. The average debt after graduation is $6,186 and the salary yardstick is $34,400.

Transylvania has a total cost per year of $44,930 and a four-year graduation rate of 63 percent. Average need-based aid is $22,883, average non-need based aid is $15,732 The average debt after graduation is $28,079 and the salary yardstick is $41,000.

Louisville has a total cost per year of $34,192 and a four-year graduation rate of 25 percent. Average need-based aid is $8,705, average non-need based aid is $7,908 The average debt after graduation is $23,375 and the salary yardstick is $37,700.
