PIKEVILLE, Ky. (Aug. 24, 2012) — Interest in the Hatfield and McCoy feud has surged recently thanks to the popular History Channel miniseries detailing the accounts of the bloody feud.

Now, history buffs, adventure seekers and those who are just plain curious can retrace the footsteps of these famous mountain families with the new Hatfield and McCoy GeoTrail.

Geocaching is akin to modern-day treasure hunting, with caches placed all over the world. This Hatfield and McCoy GeoTrail includes 15 caches, placed in historic locations relating to the families and their fighting. These caches can be found in Kentucky’s Pike County and in Mingo and Logan counties in West Virginia.

On Saturday, Sept. 1, a kickoff event will be conducted to introduce this new GeoTrail. The event will begin at 10 a.m. at the Williamson Coal House. Brochures will be provided that morning to collect the stamps located at each of the caches. The first 400 finders to log their completion of all caches will receive the special edition Hatfield and McCoy GeoTrail Coin.

The caches are designed to be family friendly and finders of all ages and experience levels are invited to come out for the event.
