McKee certified a Kentucky Trail Town

14th community to receive certification

MCKEE, Ky. (June 23, 2016) — Tourism, Arts & Heritage Cabinet Secretary Don Parkinson announced McKee as the newest certified Kentucky Trail Town.

trailMcKee is the 14th community in Kentucky to receive the designation, joining Dawson Springs, Livingston, Morehead, Olive Hill, London, Stearns, Elkhorn City, Jamestown, Manchester, Berea, Columbia, Royalton and the Harlan County Tri Cities of Cumberland, Benham & Lynch.

The Kentucky Trail Town Program is a tourism based development program that provides a plan for communities to capitalize on their opportunities for outdoor recreation. Primarily an economic development-based plan, it also seeks to increase opportunities for healthy physical activities through increased access to trails and recreational areas.

“Outdoor recreation is big business in the United States, totaling over 640 billion dollars in direct spending,” said Parkinson. “The Trail Town Program is designed to help communities capture a larger share of that spending here in Kentucky.”
