Ohio River boaters in Louisville area warned not to stop under bridges

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (July 26, 2016) – It’s important for boaters to remember the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge downtown and the new East End bridge in Prospect are active work zones, and are not areas where boaters should stop or slow down to watch the work.

During this busy summer boating season, crews have noticed several boats slowing down or stopping near the Kennedy and the East End bridge to watch the work, or seek shade in the area.

Boaters should not stop under these work zones. A great deal of activity is underway on both the Kennedy Bridge and the East End bridge. Some of the work includes bolts and other loose items that have the potential to fall below.

Crews with Walsh Construction are in the midst of installing a new floor system on the Kennedy Bridge. Much of the east side of the deck of the Kennedy is open following recent demolition work.

The best place to watch progress on the Kennedy Bridge and the new East End bridge is on the project website, www.kyinbridges.com.

The Downtown Crossing includes the new Abraham Lincoln Bridge, an improved Kennedy Bridge and interstate connections on both sides of the river. Substantial completion of the entire Downtown Crossing is scheduled for December 2016.

The East End bridge will connect the Gene Snyder Freeway in Prospect, Kentucky with State Road 265 (Lee Hamilton Highway) in Utica, Indiana. Substantial completion is scheduled for late this year.
