Louisville to hire an additional 28 police officers

FY18 cadet classes will be at maximum capacity

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 29, 2016) — Mayor Greg Fischer announced today that he will hire 28 additional police officers this fiscal year, bringing the total number of recruits to 150, the largest class ever for the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD). This brings the FY18 cadet classes to maximum capacity.

Fischer said he will recommend full funding of about $2.8 million for the additional officers as part of his FY18 budget. The portion related to FY17 costs will be funded through a year-end budget adjustment.

“Public safety remains our highest priority as we help address the spike in violent crime,” he said.

The new police officers will be added to recruit classes between now and the end of the fiscal year (June 30, 2017).
