OWENSBORO, Ky. (Oct. 21, 2016) — On Monday Shannon Grayson will be the first female firefighter in the 150-year history of the Owensboro Fire Department, reports the Kentucky New Era.

Assistant Fire Chief Bill Van Winkle told the New Era that women have applied to the department in the past, but Grayson is only one of two women who have passed the required tests.

Tests include a demanding physical agility test, which is timed and consists of dragging hoses and equipment, raising ladders and climbing stairs.

Van Winkle told the New Erea that gender wasn’t a factor in Grayon’s hiring, but that she “was one of the most and best qualified candidates who applied for the position.”
