Lexington eighth-grader wins 2017 Kentucky Geographic Bee

Advances to National Geographic Bee

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 3, 2017) — Evan Winkler, an eighth-grader at Morton Middle School in Lexington, won the 2017 Kentucky Geographic Bee on Friday at Western Kentucky University. Winkler finished third in 2016.

Pavan Kanmadikar of Meyzeek Middle School in Louisville was second and Carson King of St. James Catholic Regional School in Elizabethtown was third. A total of 88 participants competed in the event.

Winkler receives $100 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to represent Kentucky in the National Geographic Bee from May 14-17.

First prize in the national competition is a $50,000 college scholarship and lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society. Second gets a $25,000 scholarship and third a $10,000 scholarships.
