(CHI) in Lexington, Kentucky has received a $2.62 million competitive federal grant which will help CHI provide expanded comprehensive, high-quality residential substance abuse treatment for low-income, pregnant or postpartum women and their children, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and U.S. Rep. Andy Barr (R-Lexington) announced Monday.

Additionally, this funding will allow CHI to provide outpatient services for children, such as counseling regarding substance abuse prevention, and targeted outreach in Kentucky to thousands of women and extended family members.

Sen. McConnell and Rep. Barr contacted the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on behalf of CHI in support of the grant. The funding, which will provide $524,000 each year for five years, was awarded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, an agency within HHS.

Sen. McConnell said, “I have visited Chrysalis House and seen first-hand their dedication to improving the health and safety of mothers and children in Kentucky. I was proud to help CHI secure this critical funding for lifesaving treatment programs. These federal funds promote community-based, innovative thinking to combat addiction. As the opioid epidemic continues to devastate communities in Kentucky, my office stands ready to help other organizations compete for these federal resources.”

Rep. Barr said, “Drug abuse in Kentucky has reached epidemic proportions and there is a dire need for more services to help more Kentuckians recover from addiction. This federal funding will help by allowing Chrysalis House to expand their comprehensive treatment services and deliver prevention and recovery support services to pregnant and postpartum women. I am proud to have supported this grant, and I am grateful to Chrysalis House for their outstanding work to help women and children in need. Working together we can make a difference in the fight against drug abuse and give more Kentuckians a second chance at life free from addiction.”

“Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Congressman Andy Barr recognize the unique need that Chrysalis House serves with women and their families in their recovery and we are grateful for their support of our grant application,” said Lisa Minton, Chrysalis House executive director. “This grant award adds certainty to our delivery of services to families in Kentucky. By offering specific and intensive treatment programs, Chrysalis House works to break the cycle of addiction. Together we are building a community–one family at a time.”

Chrysalis House is Kentucky’s largest licensed substance abuse treatment program for women.
