LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 15, 2017) — A memorial to those who lost their lives in the Korean War will be dedicated on Lexington’s Veterans Park War Memorial Walk this Sunday.
“War Memorial Walk is something our city has needed for a long time,” Mayor Jim Gray said. It’s a place where people can come and offer their respect and gratitude to all of the men and women who have died for our country. That’s very important in Lexington.” The dedication begins at 2 p.m. at the Park, 650 Southpoint Dr.
Members of the Korean War Veterans Association, Chapter 219, have been working for more than four years to raise money and finalize the design of the memorial, Gray said. “Veterans made this happen. That makes it special, and we are grateful for their contribution.”
During the coming months, benches, landscaping and an educational sign about the new memorial will be added to its Memorial Walk plaza. Lexington Granite Company built the memorial.
“I am so happy that we are able to recognize the Korean War veterans with this new memorial. Veterans Park is such an important piece of our city and honors all of those who have given so much to our country. I look forward to the continuing development of the new War Memorial Walk,” said Councilmember Susan Lamb, who represents the Veterans Park area. Lamb provided some funds for the memorial through Parks & Recreation.
The newly designed Memorial Walk is along West Hickman Trail, as it passes through Veterans Park. The Walk is also home to a memorial to those who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. The Vietnam memorial has been relocated to the Memorial Walk from its original home in Phoenix Park, downtown.
In addition, Veterans Park is home to a Gold Star Family memorial, recognizing families who have lost loved ones in service to our country, and a WWII era tank. Both are located near the park entrance.
