COMMUNITY PROFILE: Georgetown and Scott County

Quick Facts
Georgetown-Scott County has a unique heritage, economy

Without a doubt, Scott County, and Georgetown, its largest city, have several characteristics that set it apart from the rest of the region. According to local leaders, Scott County is an economic engine, setting a good example of wise development for the rest of the state. Here are some of the things that are unique about Georgetown-Scott County and its history:

  • Scott County’s major attraction to Native Americans and early pioneers were its water and abundant buffalo. The Royal Spring, site of Georgetown’s first settlement, still provides the city with most of its water.

  • The area was first settled in 1775 by pioneers led by John McClelland. They built a fort around the Royal Spring. It was abandoned after an Indian attack in late 1776.

  • Georgetown was re-settled by early Baptists led by the Rev. Elijah Craig in 1789. Chartered before Kentucky attained statehood, the town was named in honor of George Washington.

  • Perhaps an indicator of its manufacturing future, Georgetown was the site of Kentucky’s first paper mill, woolen mill, rope maker and commercial distillery (all built in the 1780s and owned entirely or in part by the Rev. Craig).

  • Scott County is perhaps the only county in the U.S. where more than half its employment is in the manufacturing sector, yet its high school boasts an award-winning Future Farmers of America program.

  • More than 60,000 people visit Scott County each fall to patronize local farms and orchards that produce and sell a wide range of products, from locally-grown pumpkins to apple cider.

  • Residents of Georgetown are closer to downtown Lexington than many residents of Southern Fayette County.

  • Scott County was the birthplace of 1988 Kentucky Derby winner, a horse aptly named Winning Colors. She was only the second filly to win the spring classic.

  • Georgetown College’s Rawlings Stadium is the only location of an NFL training camp in Kentucky. It is used annually by the Cincinnati Bengals.

  • Georgetown College is the only Kentucky college ranked both one of America’s Best Christian Colleges and one of the 100 Best College Buys by Institutional Research & Evaluation, Inc.

  • The Toyota manufacturing facility makes the Camry, America’s best-selling car for the last four years. Georgetown Camrys are exported to Japan – and other countries, as well.
