KentuckyWired partners with Owensboro to expedite broadband connectivity

FRANKFORT, Ky. (April 30, 2018) — The Kentucky Communications Network Authority (KCNA) and Owensboro Municipal Utilities (OMU) have reached an agreement to lease a portion of OMU’s broadband network to KentuckyWired.

KentuckyWired is a commonwealth project constructing 3,000 miles of fiber optic cable into all 120 Kentucky counties. The agreement allows OMU’s fiber network to serve as part of the KentuckyWired network, thus saving the commonwealth valuable construction time.

“We are pleased to partner with KentuckyWired to expand broadband access in our area,” OMU interim general manager Kevin Frizzell said. “OMU has a long history of providing quality internet services and is pleased to be part of this project.”

State Sen. Joe Bowen, of Owensboro, said: “I am pleased that OMU and the KentuckyWired project have reached an agreement that will allow greater connectivity and internet access to people in our community. Education, public works, and private entities will all benefit from this connectivity, and I look forward to the final completion of this project.”

“We’re very happy to sign this agreement. The use of OMU’s fiber cable will save the commonwealth both money and construction time,” said Phillip Brown, executive director of KCNA — the agency charged with overseeing the KentuckyWired project.

Construction of the KentuckyWired network continues with over 700 miles of fiber optic cable constructed and 16 of the planned 19 telecommunications huts put in place throughout the state.
