Murray State University offers Stock Market Game for Kentucky students

MURRAY, Ky. (May 31, 2018) — More than 4,000 high school and middle school students across Kentucky participated in the Stock Market Game during the 2017–18 academic year through the Center for Economic Education at Murray State University.

The Stock Market Game is a financial literacy program that has impacted thousands of students and teachers across the Commonwealth for many years. While playing the game, student teams learn about saving, investing and planning for the future by investing a virtual $100,000 in stocks of real companies in a real-time Internet simulation. The program is now organized and operated by the Center for Economic Education at Murray State and Todd Broker, the center’s director and lecturer of economics in the Arthur J. Bauernfeind College of Business.

“I receive feedback from teachers all over the state about how invaluable the Stock Market Game has been in their classrooms for teaching students not just financial literacy concepts but life concepts,” Broker said. “The program really is shaping students’ futures for the better.”

The Center for Economic Education held an awards luncheon honoring west Kentucky winners of the Stock Market Game on April 30 in Murray. Broker then visited six schools in a span of three days (May 21–23) to present awards to winning students from other parts of the state, including the following:

In addition to the Stock Market Game, the Center partners with local businesses and community organizations to implement economic education into service-area schools, maintains an affiliation with the National Council on Economic Education and the Kentucky Council on Economic Education, produces and distributes teaching materials for K-12 teachers and supports economic and entrepreneurial training for K-12 teachers.
