Students at Morehead Youth Development Center earn plant science certifications

Students take important step in pursuing career goals by completing industry-recognized certifications

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 27, 2018) – The Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice has recognized eight Morehead Youth Development Center students who earned the Bayer CropScience Plant Science Certification during the 2017-2018 academic school year. Through the intensive certification program, students gained essential career skills that promote a successful transition to post-secondary education and the workforce.

“It feels good getting this certificate. It makes me feel better about myself, like I actually accomplished something for one in my life. Finishing this makes me think what else I could accomplish when I actually try,” said one Morehead youth.

Students with this certification have received the necessary background and knowledge in the plant science industry, including major topics like plant processes, nutrition, genetics, water resources and measurement, crop production and scientific classification. To earn the certification, each student completed hours of required coursework and passed a rigorous final exam.

“Finishing the certification program was a big deal to me because it is something that I achieved. It is an accomplishment that no one can take from me. It shows that I did was I needed to do to become certified,” said one of the students who received this prestigious award.

Endorsed by Bayer CropScience and powered by iCEV, the certification enhances student résumés and helps them stand out to prospective colleges and employers. The certification reflects current industry standards in order to ensure students are career-ready.

“Continuing to lead innovation in agriculture will require bright minds with expertise in all areas of plant sciences. This certification program will provide students with essential tools to equip them to be the next great leaders in plant science. ” said Mike Gilbert, Ph.D., head of Breeding and Trait Development, Bayer CropScience.
