UK named a great college to work for

LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 17, 2018) — The University of Kentucky has received national recognition for its outstanding work environment for faculty and staff.

The Chronicle of Higher Education has named UK among its list of Great Colleges to Work For in 2018. UK is one of only three schools in the Southeastern Conference and the only school in Kentucky to receive the award, which is based primarily on employee feedback.

“The University of Kentucky is a great place to work because of its people,” President Eli Capilouto said. “The UK family shares an uncommon commitment to our shared mission of teaching, research, service and health care. Faculty and staff often share with me the camaraderie of their colleagues and their willingness to partner within and across disciplines and units. This collaborative spirit is critically important as our work becomes increasingly interconnected.”

The distinction serves as a reminder of the strong culture and community UK continues to foster. It also serves as a valuable tool to attract and retain talented faculty and staff.

This year, 253 institutions participated in the survey. It was administered for The Chronicle by ModernThink LLC, a Delaware-based human resources consulting firm. It is based on a workplace survey that has been used in 55 “Best Places to Work” programs and more than 4,000 organizations.

At large institutions such as UK, a random sample of 600 faculty, exempt professional staff, non-exempt staff and administrators were invited to take the survey. The survey includes questions on 12 categories:

• collaborative governance;
• compensation and benefits;
• confidence in senior leadership;
• diversity;
• facilities, workspace and security;
• job satisfaction;
• professional/career-development programs;
• respect and appreciation;
• supervisor or department chair relationship;
• teaching environment;
• tenure clarity and process; and
• work-life balance.
