Constitutionality of pension reform legislation argued before Kentucky Supreme Court

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Gov. Matt Bevin’s general counsel and Attorney General Andy Beshear Thursday argued their cases in the lawsuit on the constitutionality of recent reforms to the state’s pension systems before the Kentucky Supreme Court.

After its passage during the 2018 session and a signature by the governor, the pension reform law was challenged by Beshear. The hearing in front of the Kentucky Supreme Court on Thursday gave both sides a chance to explain their arguments before a final decision is made by the highest court.

Steve Pitt, the general counsel for Gov. Bevin, and Beshear argued the constitutionality of the bill and of the process by which it was passed.

A ruling by the Supreme Court in the case is not expected until after the Nov. 6 general elections, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.
