Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education appoints Murray State’s Arant as convener

Dr. Mark Arant

MURRAY, Ky. — The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) appointed Dr. Mark Arant of Murray State University as convener for the state’s chief academic officers.

Arant, provost and vice president of academic affairs at Murray State, will hold the following responsibilities in his role as convener: serving as moderator for meetings of the chief academic officers and collaborating with CPE to help move forward initiatives aimed at improving academic opportunities at institutions of higher education throughout Kentucky.

“Murray State has a respected academic reputation,” Arant said, “and to be recognized like this is a tremendous honor.”

Over the course of the next year, Arant anticipates working closely with the state’s chief academic officers, adding that he is especially looking forward to collaborating with and learning from Dr. Aaron Thompson, executive vice president of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education.

Ultimately, Arant hopes to use the opportunity to continue furthering his understanding of Kentucky and to continue developing his professional network among higher education officials and representatives from throughout the state.

“The other thing, too, is to continue to put Murray State on the forefront,” Arant added. “We are a respected institution in the state of Kentucky. I hope to continue to make certain that people understand we do a fantastic job here. We’ve got great people who are doing incredible things.”

Arant has served as provost and vice president of academic affairs at Murray State since April 2017. In this role, he has led the development of the strategic plan for academic affairs, has established new agreements for international exchange programs and has created new concurrent enrollment initiatives with area high schools.

Prior to beginning his time at Murray State, Arant held positions at Northeastern State University, University of Arkansas–Fort Smith and University of Louisiana–Monroe. He earned his PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Alabama and his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Louisiana Tech University.
