LEXINGTON, Ky. — Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings paid $320,000 for Saucy Dame, a 3-year-old Distorted Humor filly cataloged as a broodmare prospect, during Thursday’s fourth session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, which recorded brisk trade throughout the day.
Keeneland sold 259 horses for a total $17,381,000, an average of $67,108 and a median of $52,000. There are no comparable figures from 2017.
Cumulatively, 832 horses have sold for $142,523,000 for an average of $171,302 and a median of $105,000.
Consigned by VanMeter-Gentry Sales, agent, the session-topping Saucy Dame is out of stakes winner Storm Beauty, by Storm Cat, and from the family of champion Gold Beauty, Grade 2 winner The Prime Minister, Grade 3 winner Buffum and stakes winner Stormy West.
“She was a beautiful Distorted Humor and comes from a great dam,” Banke said. “She looks perfect for breeding to some of our stallions. There’s a number of candidates.”
“We are pleased with the price,” consignor Tom VanMeter said. “We put her (in Book 3) for a reason: We wanted her to stand out and she did. She has a big pedigree. She is a breeders’ mare. We sold her for Louise Lally’s Summerplace Farm. They bought her as a yearling (for $200,000 at Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale). They like to race.”
“The market is great,” VanMeter added. “I have been trying to buy mares like her, and I keep getting shut out. Weanlings are tough to buy if they are good. We bought a few and we are rockin’ on – we still have a week to go.”
At $285,000, the session’s top-priced weanling is a colt by Speightstown from the family of Grade 1 winners Dream Rush and Dreaming of Julia, Grade 3 winner Song of Spring and stakes winner Atreides purchased by Evergreen Stable. Consigned by St. George Sales, agent, he is out of the Malibu Moon mare Magical Dream.
Lyrics, a 4-year-old daughter of Speightstown in foal to Lea sold to Tenlane Farm for $270,000. Claiborne Farm, agent, consigned the mare, whose dam is Canadian champion Embur’s Song, by Unbridled’s Song. Lyrics is from the family of Preakness (G1) winner Exaggerator.
“She’s a nice young mare, big family and very active family, so we liked her very much,” Tom Evans, who signed the ticket, said. “She’ll come back to the farm in Versailles (Kentucky) and hopefully have many years there. We have no plans on who to breed her back to yet.”
T.W. Bachman paid $230,000 for Harbor Mist, a 9-year-old stakes-winning Rockport Harbor mare in foal to Frosted. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, she is out of the Risen Star mare Jaramar Miss and is a half-sister to stakes winner Jaramar Rain.
“The market is strong,” Bachman said. “A young, good-looking mare that is bred right is very, very tough to buy. I was the underbidder about four times yesterday.”
Charles H. Boden, agent for Keene Ridge Racing, went to $225,000 to acquire Financial Recovery, a 4-year-old stakes-winning daughter of Street Cry (IRE) in foal to Hard Spun consigned by Stonereath Stud, agent. Out of the Saint Ballado mare Flawless Diamond, she is from the family of Grade 3 winner C. Zee and stakes winner Blue Heart.
“Her pedigree stood out more than anything, especially being by Street Cry,” Boden said. “I’m a big fan of Hard Spun, and David Anderson (of Anderson Farms) is a really great breeder. She’s likely to be a mare that we’ll foal out and sell (the foal) back next year. There’s a chance we’ll keep the mare, but we kinda bought her to bring her back here (to sell) next year.”
Two mares consigned by Lane’s End, agent, brought $220,000.
Larkin Armstrong, agent, paid that amount for Blind Pool, a 4-year-old daughter of Awesome Again whose dam, Taboo, by Forestry, is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Creative Cause and Grade 2 winner Destin. Blind Pool is in foal to Practical Joke.
“She has good conformation, and we like her active family,” Armstrong said. “She is a young mare with a lot of potential.”
Patrick Lawley-Wakelin, agent, paid $220,000 for the 6-year-old Tapit mare Callista in foal to Shackleford. Out of Sweet Talker, winner of Keeneland’s 2005 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (G1), Callista is a full sister to stakes winner Sweet Tapper and from the family of Grade 3 winner Silver Medallion and stakes winner Pretty Perfection.
Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, was Thursday’s leading consignor, selling 31 horses for $2,555,500.
Phoenix Thoroughbreds III purchased three horses for $485,000 to lead all buyers.
