Former state auditor files paperwork to enter 2019 governor’s race

Former state auditor Adam Edelen filed paperwork Thursday with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance to raise money for the 2019 governor’s race. An official campaign announcement by Edelen is expected next week.

Edelen becomes the third prominent Democrat to enter the 2019 race along with Attorney General Andy Beshear and House Minority Leader Rocky Adkins.

According to the campaign paperwork filed on Thursday morning, Edelen has chosen Gill Holland, a film producer from Louisville, as his running mate.

Edelen served as state auditor from 2011-2015 and previously served as chief of staff to former Gov. Steve Beshear. Following his term as auditor, Edelen started the New Kentucky Project with Kentucky Sports Radio host Matt Jones with the goal of recruiting progressive Democratic candidates to run for public office and has been working on projects in the private sector.

Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin has stated he will run for re-election in 2019, but has not yet filed the official paperwork. No other Republicans have announced their intent to run at this time.

The filing deadline for candidates seeking to enter the race is Jan. 29.
