Spotz Gelato to open in Versailles and Georgetown
Philip Enlow and Beth Richardson

GEORGETOWN AND VERSAILLES, Ky. — A Kentucky Proud business that began in 2013 with a vintage travel trailer named “Humpback Hazel” is spreading sweetness across the state with two new brick-and-mortar locations. Spotz Gelato owner Beth Richardson said the award-winning frozen dessert will soon be served from scoop shops in Versailles and Georgetown.

“In time for warm weather and Keeneland, Spotz Gelato will go from only gelato trucks to two charming locations in the heart of Kentucky,” said Richardson, who took a hobby of farming and turned it into a business when she and husband Philip Enlow created Spotz Gelato. “Our first brick-and-mortar locations will open in historic buildings in Versailles and Georgetown. And, for those of you who are not near those towns, our fleet of gelato trucks will rev up in April.”

Built in a historic former church complex, the Versailles scoop shop is located at 148 Court Street, next to Rolling Oven Pizza and The Galerie Wedding & Event Venue. The shop is decorated in Spotz’s signature look of hot pink and dots, and includes a walk-up window and seating made from church pews.

The Versailles location has a Charity Preview Night set for 6-8 p.m. March 12 and Grand Opening noon-9 p.m. March 15. All proceeds from the Charity Preview Night will benefit the Woodford Humane Society. Adoptable dogs will be on-site.

The Georgetown location is 135 West Main Street close to Galvin’s and Local Feed. Charity Preview Night, 6-8 p.m. March 28, will support Old Friends Farm. The Grand Opening is noon-9 p.m. March 29. Also decorated in pink and dots, the Georgetown scoop shop is housed in one of the oldest buildings on Main Street.

From Spotz Gelato’s Instagram post:

“The most popular question we hear is ‘What’s the difference between gelato and ice cream?’ It’s pretty simple, really. The milk to cream ratio is different in gelato compared to regular ice cream and gelato. (Gelato) actually contains less fat because of this. Gelato also has less air and is a bit more dense. It will taste a lot like homemade ice cream to you. Our gelato is creamy, dreamy, and delicious. Come try it out at our Scoop.”

The shops will feature an expanded menu including sandwich cookies and cones made on-site, sorbet, gelato, milkshakes, floats, Italian sodas and Affogato (gelato with coffee). Ten flavors will be carried in the shops, with new flavors created weekly for in-store testing. Sundaes as well as Sundae Boards, which feature four flavors and five toppings, will be sized for sharing.

Kentucky Proud ingredients including milk, fruit, pecans, sorghum, and even Woodford Reserve Bourbon, are used to make the small-batch gelato and sorbet.

“We come from a farming background, so it only makes sense for us to use the freshest Kentucky ingredients in our gelato and sorbet. We source Kentucky Proud items whenever possible, love supporting our local farmers and you’ll never find artificial ingredients or flavors in our products,” said Richardson, who says the brand’s No. 1 flavor, out of more than 50, is Cookies and Cream.

Produced in small batches by hand, Spotz Gelato is made in a commercial kitchen on Richardson’s and Enlow’s farm outside of Midway. Some of the gelato recipes are inspired by recipes Richardson’s mother used including those for Banana Pudding and Key Lime Pie.

“Our family-owned business was inspired by the gelato we tasted on a trip overseas,” Richardson said. “Spotz Gelato’s mission is to create a taste of Italy with the very best ingredients the Bluegrass has to offer!”

The Versailles and Georgetown scoop shops will be open noon-9 p.m. seven days a week. Not to be left out, the fleet of hot-pink vintage trucks will be at events around the state from April through October, including the April 13 Thunder over Louisville. Trucks and indoor mini-bars may be rented for events, weddings and private parties throughout Kentucky. A schedule of where the gelato trucks will be is on https://www.spotzgelato.com.
