Owensboro Medical Health System’s new hospital will be situated on 157 acres east of downtown Owensboro.

Owensboro Medical Health System is moving forward with plans to build a new $385 million hospital to replace its existing facility.

The new 442-bed hospital will be built on 157 acres, approximately 2.5 miles east of the current midtown location, which dates back to 1938. All patient rooms at the new hospital will be private.

The new hospital is expected to open in 2013 and will create 500 healthcare jobs within five years. A study conducted by the Greater Owensboro Economic Development Corp. projects that the hospital will ultimately bring 800 new jobs to the region. In addition, the construction phase of the project is expected to create more than 4,000 jobs.

OMHS currently employs 3,147 and has an annual payroll of $163 million, making it the region’s largest employer.

Once the new hospital opens, the existing facility will continue to house the Mitchell Memorial Cancer Center.
