Founded in 1918 as BG Wholesale by Ervin Houchens and headquartered in Bowling Green, Houchens now has interests in not only the retail grocery and convenience store business, but also in restaurants, insurance, stock brokerage and financial services, franchising of optical stores, construction, fence material manufacturing and distribution, crushed stone aggregates and asphalt paving, recycling, tanning supply distribution, manufacturing, software and Web site development, and property management.

Earlier this year, Houchens CEO Jimmie Gipson told The Lane Report, “I’ve always felt that having all your eggs not in one basket is the best approach.”

Tampico Beverages will retain its name, employees and management team and will remain headquartered in Chicago.
