Demand for quality mares keeps Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale numbers strong Thursday

LEXINGTON, KY (Nov. 8, 2012) – The market for attractive, well-bred broodmares continued to show strength during Thursday’s session of Keeneland’s November Breeding Stock Sale, led by the sale of Tell It, a half-sister to prominent sire Pulpit, for $540,000.

Blandford Bloodstock purchased the 15-year-old daughter of Storm Cat, who is out of the Grade 1 stakes-winning Mr. Prospector mare Preach. Tell It is the dam of stakes winner Dream Nettie, and was sold in foal to Candy Ride (ARG). She was consigned by Claiborne Farm, agent.

Spring Party, a stakes-winning mare by Smart Strike offered in foal to Unbridled’s Song, brought the day’s second-highest price of $525,000, paid by Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, the six-year-old mare is a half sister to 2012 Forego (G1) winner Emcee.

“She is a beautiful mare and she’s got a current pedigree,” said John Moynihan, bloodstock advisor to Banke. “She’s by Smart Strike, who has turned out to be a really nice broodmare sire. She’s the one we zeroed in on today.”

During Thursday’s session, 234 horses grossed $22,278,500, for an average of $95,207 and a median of $75,000. Last year, 257 horses sold for $32,347,000, for an average of $125,864 and a median of $90,000.

Through the first three days, 443 horses have been sold for $83,783,500, for an average of $189,128 and a median of $100,000. During the corresponding period last year, 542 horses brought $147,028,500, for an average of $271,270 and a median of $140,000.

Cumulative totals for the comparable period in 2011 included two premier dispersals – the record dispersal of the estate of Edward P. Evans’ Spring Hill Farm, which sold 101 horses for $49,669,500, and the dispersal of Saud bin Khaled’s Palides Investments N.V., Inc., which sold 20 horses sold for $16,813,000.

When dispersals are excluded from the 2011 cumulative numbers, the totals are 443 horses sold for $83,783,500 versus 421 horses sold for $80,546,000, an increase of 4.02 percent. Average price of $189,128 dipped 1.15 percent from $191,321 in 2011, while the median decreased 23.08 percent from $130,000 to $100,000.

“The weanlings sold well, and there were some nice surprises on the high side regarding broodmares,” said Walt Robertson, Keeneland’s Vice President of Sales. “There was good trade all day through the very last mare (Eyeofthehurricane, the final horse in the ring, sold for $475,000 to Ben Glass, agent, to be the day’s third-highest price).”

A colt by Bernardini commanded the session’s top price for a weanling, going to BG Stables for $295,000. Out of the Mining mare Mining My Business, the colt is a half-brother to Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) winner Real Cozzy, and from the family of Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness (G1) winners Real Quiet and Majestic Prince.

The November Sale continues through Friday, November 16. Sessions begin daily at 10 a.m. EST. The entire sale is streamed live at Keeneland.com.
