LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky Science Center recently received one of 18 grants from the Greater Good Science Center (GGSC) to support the development of the permanent version of its Uniquely Human exhibition. The $25,000 grant will be used to produce innovative content on the subject of “intellectual humility” – a concept defined, most simply, as “the degree to which people recognize that their beliefs might be wrong.”
The grants are part of the GGSC’s Expanding Awareness of the Science of Intellectual Humility initiative. Supported by a three-year grant from the John Templeton Foundation, this initiative aims to deepen the public’s understanding of intellectual humility guided by recent scientific findings and highlight the relevance of intellectual humility to various sectors, including K-12 education and politics, among other goals.
When the permanent version of the exhibit is completed in 2023, Kentucky Science Center’s Uniquely Human will be a reflective and collaborative social science experience that encourages visitors to examine their identities, feelings, ways of thinking, and connections to their broader communities. At the same time, visitors will gain a deeper understanding and broader perspective on why they may react or think in certain ways. Initially, the project will explore intellectual humility through take-home conversation guides and by weaving the concept into ongoing programs and web resources for target audiences. Kentucky Science Center will also create printed and digital resources within and complementary to the exhibit.
The grant winners were selected through a competitive and rigorous process. They responded to the GGSC’s request for proposals earlier this year, which generated 150 submissions. Then through several rounds of close review by an expert committee of distinguished journalists and intellectual humility researchers, the field was ultimately narrowed to these 18 grantees. Through many different media, they will explore the topic of intellectual humility from a variety of angles and for a range of audiences. Their projects will officially kick off on August 1, and they will have until January 31, 2024, to complete their stories.
