Plowing through – Transportation crews plowing, treating roads throughout Kentucky

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Dec. 26, 2012) – Kentucky Transportation Cabinet highway crews are plowing and treating roads following the latest batch of winter weather.

Crews are working over much of the state this morning, particularly in western Kentucky and in counties along the Ohio River. In these areas, crews are treating roadways or concentrating on reported problem spots. Snow plows are pushing through three to four inches of snow in western Kentucky counties.

The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook for the area. Meteorologists there are predicting widespread moderate to heavy snow today and tonight that will gradually taper off. Gusty winds will cause extensive blowing and drifting snow, the NWS said.

A chance of light now is forecast Friday through early Saturday with minor accumulations possible.

(See warnings and forecasts for Eastern and Central Kentucky below.)

KYTC crews work as long as necessary to keep roadways open in winter. The cabinet’s vehicle and equipment fleet includes 1,065 snow plows. In addition, the cabinet can call on more than 375 snow-removal contractors.

The cabinet reminds motorists:
• Exercise greater caution when driving. Slow down!
• Be prepared for slick conditions.
• Give a wide berth to snow plows and other heavy highway equipment.
• Eliminate distractions while behind the wheel.

Condition reports on major routes are available by calling 511 or by logging onto the 511 travel and traffic information website, 511.ky.gov.

The cabinet’s SAFE Patrol is available to assist motorists whose vehicles become disabled on Kentucky interstates and parkways.  For SAFE Patrol assistance, call 511 or toll-free at 1-877-FOR-KYTC (1-877-367-5982.)

Eastern, Central Kentucky weather

An intense winter storm system is passing through the Tennessee Valley today, bringing snowy and icy conditions to southern Indiana and portions of north central Kentucky, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow is expected this afternoon and tonight. There is the potential for one to four inches of snowfall accumulations in portions of central and east central Kentucky. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for these counties.

Snow also is forecast Friday and Saturday  in Central Kentucky.
