Mahkama brings $145,000 to top Thursday at Keeneland

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 10, 2013) – Mahkama, a 4-year-old daughter of leading sire Bernardini, sold for $145,000 to Blandford Bloodstock to headline Thursday’s session of the Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale.

A winner in England, Mahkama is out of the Rahy mare Rahy Rose. She is a half-sister to Tempted Stakes (G3) winner Summer Raven, dam of Holy Bull Stakes (G3) winner Winslow Homer. She was consigned as a broodmare prospect by Brookdale Sales, agent.

With one day remaining in the auction, 924 horses have been sold for $43,688,600, an increase of 14.99 percent over last year when 1,003 horses brought $37,991,900.  Average price rose 24.83 percent from $37,878 to $47,282. The median of $20,000 was up 33.33 percent from $15,000 in 2012.

On Thursday, Keeneland sold 248 horses for $3,389,600, down 6.38 percent from 2012 when 253 yearlings brought $3,620,700. The session average of $13,668 dipped 4.49 percent from $14,311 last year, while the median decreased 17.65 percent from $8,500 to $7,000.

The complete dispersal of Issam Fares’ Fares Farm, Lane’s End, agent, concluded Thursday with a total of 78 horses sold for $7,313,000, for an average of $93,756 and a median of $56,000.

Night Site, offered as a racing or stallion prospect, brought a final bid of $135,000 from Raut LLC. The four-year-old colt by Giant’s Causeway is out of multiple Grade 1 winner Sightseek and is a half-brother to the graded stakes-placed colt Raison d’Etat. He was consigned by Mill Ridge Sales, agent.
