O’Mara named Lexington finance commissioner

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 4, 2013) — Mayor Jim Gray on Monday announced the appointment of Bill O’Mara as finance commissioner of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government.

“Bill has been a leading member of our financial management team since my first day in office,” Gray said. “He has helped us put our city back in the black through strong financial management, and he will keep us there with conservative, thoughtful, experienced leadership.”

O’Mara has been director of Lexington’s Division of Revenue since 1995. In that post he has greatly improved revenue forecasting for Lexington and increased multiple revenue streams. He currently is serving as acting finance commissioner, and also served as acting commissioner in 2009.

“Mayor Gray came to government with a business background and immediately made financial management a priority,” O’Mara said. “We have steered through some of the city’s toughest financial challenges, including the pension and the cost of employee health insurance. As a result, our city’s financial picture is improving. My goal is to make sure that continues.”

O’Mara holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Kentucky. He and his wife have three daughters and two grandchildren.

O’Mara replaces Jane Driskell, who left the Gray administration to become state budget director. His appointment is subject to confirmation by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government Council. A confirmation hearing has been scheduled for 3:45 p.m., Thursday, March 7.
