HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (March 22, 2013) — Jeffrey A. Standen has been named dean of the Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University, effective July 1.
Standen is Van Winkle Melton Professor of Law and associate dean for faculty at Willamette University College of Law in Salem, Ore. He has been at Willamette since 1990, rising through the ranks from assistant to associate to full professor. He also spent one year (1996) as visiting professor and scholar-in-residence at the University of Virginia School of Law and another (1999) as visiting professor of law at the University of San Diego.
“I am honored to be selected by NKU to lead the Chase College of Law,” Standen said, “and I very much look forward to working with the faculty, administration and alumni to ensure that our students receive a world-class, practice-ready education that prepares them for every success”
As associate dean for faculty, Standen’s primary responsibilities have included faculty development, program development, academic standards and curriculum. He supervised the transition to electronic evaluations, created an LL.M. program, revised the college’s research grant program, instituted a faculty newsletter, contributed to the development of a part-time evening program, oversaw the summer school program, revamped the bar education program and provided oversight for curricular matters and faculty work.
NKU Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Gail Wells said Standen will take Chase to a new level.
“President Mearns and I are confident that Jeffrey has the experience, vision and demonstrated leadership capacity to be an extraordinary dean who will build upon the strong foundation of excellence in the Chase College of Law,” Wells said.
Prior to joining Willamette, Standen served as deputy general counsel for the United States Sentencing Commission (1989-90), spent four years in litigation practice focused on financial instruments and civil racketeering at Hunton & Williams (1986-90) and served as law clerk for the Hon. Robert F. Chapman, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
He has published three books in the past five years, three book chapters and several articles. He has given numerous presentations on sports law and gaming law. He has been interviewed by ESPN, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Slate, The Atlantic, Time and Forbes.
Standen earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and his bachelor’s degree in government from Georgetown University.
He will replace Dennis Honabach, who announced last fall that he would be stepping down after seven years as dean to join the NKU faculty.
