Lexington Theological Seminary moving to 16,000 s.f. space at Lexington Green Complex

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 24, 2013) — Lexington Theological Seminary announces its new campus home at Lexington Green Complex.

The property at 230 Lexington Green Circle has more than 16,000 s.f. of space, which includes classrooms, a library, administrative offices on the third floor, and fellowship and worship space on the fifth floor.

The former Lexington Theological Seminary campus is now owned by the University of Kentucky.

“We believe this space better meets the current needs of the Seminary as we assess our future facility needs, whether that be a free-standing campus space or an existing facility such as this one,” said Board of Trustees Chairman Gary Kidwell.

The new location is within 4 miles of the 63-year-old campus at 631 S. Limestone, which the University of Kentucky purchased June 28 as the Seminary board sought to better meet the education model designed for the changing demographics of the student population.

The decision to move came after careful and prayerful consideration of the best way to meet the Seminary’s long-term needs and goals to educate pastors.  In 2010 LTS transformed its programs to shift the center of ministry preparation from the seminary campus to the church, while using technology to connect students to theological education without requiring a move to a residential seminary campus.

LTS President Charisse Gillett said, “This new space better equips us to be faithful to our mission to prepare leaders for the church. We honor our history, which we know that has included change over the nearly 150-year history of this Seminary. We are excited for the future of Lexington Theological Seminary and our work in the church as we begin to write the next chapter in our story. We are grateful for the continued support of our alumni and friends as we transition to our new campus home and continue the work of preparing leaders for the church.”

A dedication and service of blessing for the Limestone campus is scheduled for November 15 at 11:30 a.m. in the Sanders Chapel.

The Seminary will relocate its administration offices by December 31. On-campus classes will move to the new facility after January 2014. The library will be relocated by August 2014.

Founded in 1865, LTS is the oldest seminary affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and has been a part of the Lexington community since its early days at Bacon College. The Seminary moved to the current campus on Limestone in 1950. At the time, LTS was a residential Seminary.

Updates about the move will be available at www.lextheo.edu/transformation.
