LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 30, 2013) – Gov. Steve Beshear today joined legislators and local officials for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting on the first phase of a project to widen and improve heavily traveled U.S. 25 between Georgetown and Lexington.
“We take pride in our highway system and recognize that good roads, and good connections between our communities, are indispensable to our continued growth and economic development,” Gov. Beshear said. “It is exciting to witness these important projects come full circle from groundbreaking to completion.”
The $16 million project involved the four-laning and partial realignment of a 2.6-mile section of roadway from a point just south of Ironworks Pike in Fayette County to Etter Lane in Scott County. A second phase – widening of three miles from south of Ironworks to Spurr Road in Lexington – is envisioned in the newly enacted Kentucky Highway Plan.
“As Georgetown continues to grow, so does our need for better roads to and from our community,” said Sen. Damon Thayer, of Georgetown. “This project will help make travel more effective and keep the roads safe for citizens. I’m excited to see this phase completed, and I’m looking forward to completion of the final phase.”
“Anyone who uses U.S. 25 can tell you how traffic is often gridlocked because the road can no longer handle the amount of automobiles that use it every day,” said Rep. Ryan Quarles, of Georgetown. “This new section between Georgetown and the Interstate 75-Ironworks Pike interchange will help open the economic highway linking my city with Lexington, while improving safety by expanding the road to four-lanes.”
The construction contract was awarded to a joint venture of L-M Asphalt Partners Ltd. and Nally Gibson LLC, of Georgetown.
