DHL Express has announced plans to reopen its facility at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) to serve as the company’s U.S. overnight package sorting operation. CVG served as the German-based express delivery company’s international hub from 1983 until the hub was relocated to Wilmington, Ohio, in 2005.
The reopening will create some 830 jobs – 180 full-time positions, 650 part-time – in addition to the 200 positions DHL has retained at CVG since moving the sorting operations to Wilmington.
The decision to reopen the sorting operation at CVG stems from DHL’s decision last year to withdraw from the U.S. parcel market and focus on international shipments. As a result, DHL announced that it would close its Wilmington hub, where it employed more than 8,000 workers. Since then, thousands of jobs have been eliminated; the company now has about 130 part-time workers and 350 full-time employees in Wilmington. DHL has said all present and former Wilmington employees are being encouraged to apply for the jobs at CVG, which is 65 miles from Wilmington.
With the company now focusing on international operations, DHL said reestablishing operations at CVG “will be more cost effective for handling the company’s international express shipping volumes, and is expected to improve DHL’s long-term financial position.”
Kentucky offered a $1.8 million incentive package to woo the company back to CVG. The transition is expected to be complete by mid- to late summer.
