Craft Academy at Morehead State earns Cognia STEM Certification

MOREHEAD, Ky. The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics at Morehead State University has been recommended for Cognia STEM Certification for its commitment to STEM education.

The Craft Academy was recognized by the review team as a “model program.” Cognia, the leading provider of accreditation and certification, assessment and improvement services, aims to help parents, community leaders, and stakeholders identify quality STEM schools and programs that:

  • Promote scientific inquiry and design thinking
  • Develop skill sets that transfer across career sectors
  • Bolster students’ capacity for critical thinking and perseverance through complex tasks
  • Engage students deeply in their local community in ways that connect learning to the real world.

“We welcomed external feedback from a well-respected education organization such as Cognia,” said Dr. Carol Christian, director of the Craft Academy. “Cognia visits programs and schools across the nation and internationally. When they recognize the Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics as a high quality and model program, it validates that we are in fact building a premier STEM program. We are proud to be the first program in Kentucky to receive their STEM Certification.”

To earn Cognia STEM Certification, institutions must demonstrate a learner centric environment, and experienced evaluators look for STEM learning opportunities that are well integrated in all content areas and multiple environments.

The Craft Academy’s purpose is to meet the unique educational needs of academically gifted and talented high school juniors and seniors in the commonwealth. The academic rigor of the Craft Academy challenges students to excel at their highest level through project-based STEM+X courses and hands-on learning experiences, with emphasis on entrepreneurship and innovation, design and creativity, and civic and regional engagement.
