Zappos fulfillment center receives SHARP safety recertification by Kentucky Labor Cabinet

Becomes Largest Employer in Kentucky to Receive SHARP Recertification

SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. (April 4, 2012) —  Zappos.com, a leader in online apparel and footwear sales, Wednesday received a SHARP recertification for its Kentucky fulfillment center and operations. The U.S. Department of Labor designed the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) to encourage and recognize excellence in occupational safety and health among small to mid-sized employers.

The Zappos Fulfillment Center, located in Shepherdsville, employs approximately 4,000 out of the company’s 6,000 employees.

In order to receive SHARP certification, Zappos Fulfillment Center had to undergo a thorough assessment by Kentucky Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) consultants. The assessment includes ensuring that Zappos Fulfillment Center’s illness and injury rates fell below the national averages, as well as ensuring the company exceeds OSHA standards as it relates to workplace health and safety.

Although companies must meet federal standards for the program, the Kentucky Labor Cabinet presents the award because Kentucky has had its own federally approved Occupational Safety and Health program for over 35 years. Zappos Fulfillment Center has been a SHARP certified company since April 1, 2009, and plans to continue improving safety at its facility.

“Zappos Fulfillment Center takes great pride in providing a safe and healthy work environment for our employees,” said Leah Morris, safety and risk manager at Zappos Fulfillment Center. “Continuing the SHARP program acknowledges our dedication and commitment that we have implemented in our constant quest to strive towards excellence.”

Zappos Fulfillment Center was presented with a plaque acknowledging its SHARP recertification from Kentucky OSH officials in a ceremony by Commissioner of Workplace Standards Michael Dixon on April 4, 2012. The Shepherdsville distribution facility is the 17th active SHARP company in Kentucky. SHARP recertification is good for two years and may be renewed. A company is exempted from scheduled KYOSH compliance inspections during the certification period.

Other Kentucky companies with SHARP certification include: Uncle Charlie’s Meats–Richmond; E.D. Bullard Co.–Cynthiana; Multicorr Co.–Louisville;  Federal Mogul Maysville–Maysville; Washington Penn Plastic Co.–Frankfort; Maker’s Mark Co.–Loretto; American Woodmark Co.–Monticello; Univance Inc.–Winchester; Ceradyne Inc. –Lexington; SUN Products–Bowling Green; Gate Precast Co. –Winchester; ADI–Louisville; National Office Furniture–Fordsville; Pittsburg Tank & Tower–Henderson; Roll Forming Corporation Custom–Shelbyville; and 3A Composites USA–Glasgow.
