Keeneland September Yearling Sale kicked off Monday

Sale runs through Sept. 21

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 8, 2014) — The 71st Keeneland September Yearling Sale, the world’s largest auction of its kind, began on Monday and will continue through Sept. 21.

yearling saleLast year’s gross sales were $280,491,300, the highest since 2008 and the sale of 18 yearlings for $1 million was the most since 2008. Similar numbers are expected this year.

Here are numbers for this year’s sale:

  • 4,181: Number of yearlings — 2,215 are colts, 1,962 are fillies and four are geldings.
  • 246: Number of sires represented.
  • 190: Number of yearlings cataloged in the Monday and Tuesday sessions. (191 horses are in each session on Wednesday and Thursday to complete Book 1.)
  • 143: Number of consignors.
  • 46: Number of Keeneland barns used to house the yearlings (used more than once as the sale progresses).
  • 28: Number of states, provinces and foreign countries where yearlings were foaled – Alberta (4 horses), Alabama (1), Arkansas (3), California (11), Chile (1), Florida (136), Great Britain (4), I Illinois (23), Indiana (37), Iowa (11), Ireland (13), Japan (1), Kentucky (3,429), Louisiana (48), Manitoba (1), Maryland (30), Minnesota (4), New York (108), North Carolina (1), Ohio (43), Oklahoma (21), Ontario (124), Pennsylvania (73), Texas (2), Turkey (1), Utah (1), Venezuela (1), Virginia (31), West Virginia (18).
