Fleischaker receives prestigious award for protecting journalists

Jon Fleischaker

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 16, 2012) – Jon Fleischaker, a partner in Dinsmore’s Louisville office, has been awarded the Goehler First Amendment Defender Award by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). The award was established by Regions 4 and 5 of the SPJ in 2011 to honor the work and memory of Cincinnati attorney Dick Goehler in defending the First Amendment rights of journalists and citizens. Regions 4 and 5 of the SPJ include Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia, Western Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois.

“Jon has long been a First Amendment champion, and we are proud to honor his work and legacy with this award,” says Liz Hansen, Region 5 Director, SPJ. “He is a sought-after leader in media matters and has long defended media publications and protected the public’s right to know.”

Fleischaker has more than 40 years of experience in media law and First Amendment cases and actively is involved in the representation of newspapers and broadcasters dealing with publication issues. He has been the most visible attorney in Kentucky in dealing with First Amendment concerns. Fleischaker is the only non-journalist ever inducted into the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame.

In addition to his law practice, Fleischaker continues to support First Amendment issues through higher education. In particular, he and his wife, Kim Greene, created the Fleischaker-Greene Fund for Excellence in First Amendment Issues at Western Kentucky University (WKU). The fund supports the Fleischaker-Greene Scholars Program and gives top students in the School of Journalism the opportunity to take an advanced special topics class once a year and bring nationally-recognized speakers in journalism and First Amendment issues to WKU

Dinsmore is comprised of more than 475 attorneys practicing in 13 cities throughout Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Washington D.C.
