Goal is to reduce number of deaths from preventable diseases

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 10, 2015) — The University of Kentucky and Shaping Our Appalachian Region (SOAR) on Tuesday announced a three-year, more than $300,000 partnership to work on improving health in Appalachia.

SOAR_Kentucky_logoUK has 125 individual research projects in Appalachia revolving around the five largest causes of preventable deaths: cancer, heart disease, pulmonary disease, stroke and unintentional deaths such as accidents and drugs.

UK president Eli Capilouto said there are hundreds of preventable deaths each year in Kentucky and that Eastern Kentucky has cancer and heart disease death rates well above state and national averages.
